Not My Blind Date

Darlene sat anxiously at her table. Her roller derby teammates had set her up on this blind date. She had one roller skate sitting on the floor beside her. That was supposed to be how he would identify her.

After what felt like forever, a guy sat across from her. He immediately began to discuss his aspirations of a career in entertainment. As a production assistant. “Hey, it may be a lot of gopher work, but I get to see cool people sometimes. And take out their trash!”

Darlene was wondering what on earth her teammates had talked her into.

Their salads arrived just in time. He was starting to talk nonsense about being able to draw better than DaVinci.

This guy was acting crazy! Sure, last night was the full moon, and that always brings out the weirdos, but certainly her friends knew her better than this! He was eating his salad with a knife and his fingers. Gross!

Suddenly, there was a loud bang from the kitchen. The staff came running out, followed by an eruption of smoke. People began scrambling for the exits.

Darlene grabbed her skate and bag, glad to be rid of her awful date. A man’s voice nearby said, “Darlene?” Startled, and realizing her name had not been said for the last fifteen minutes, she turned to see a man wearing the roller derby team hoodie. “I’m Drew. Sorry I’m late. Let’s get out of this mess, and I’ll explain.”

They walked across the street where Drew explained he thought they were supposed to meet at a different restaurant across town. He had texted her teammate to pass along the message that he was on his way. Darlene pulled out her phone and saw the text and quickly responded to say she had connected with Drew and they were safe from the fire.

Once cleared by EMS, Darlene and Drew went to a cafe around the corner where they enjoyed a quick lunch and some sweet pastries. It ended up being a really good blind date.

Darlene made a promise to herself to never again assume a situation was what it seemed.
