Sitting at a cafe, drinking my usual coffee, and enjoying a nice baguette, I look up from my notes. There he is across the street. The convict I had been chasing down all over Paris.
This man was responsible for many deaths, including that of my friend. I had found him, and I knew what I had to do: trap him, call the authorities, and hope to not hurt a bystander in the process.
I pay for my snack and try to follow my enemy as discreetly as possible. I still don’t know how he escaped prison, but here I was, close on his heels.
He heads straight toward the cathedral at the end of the row. I may be able to corner him there. I keep out of earshot and call the authorities, getting them on their way sooner rather than later.
Of course, renovations were being done on the cathedral. Amidst the religious artwork, mostly angels and demons fighting, there had to be a good place to trap him. I found my desired location under a painting of an angel striking down Lucifer. It seems appropriate, and it is in a corner easily visible from the doorway.
Mass must be about to start as I can hear some singing nearby. I grab a hammer from some of the scaffolding just in case I need some protection. If all goes as planned, I won’t have to use it. He is heading toward the corner now.
BOOM!!
An explosion rocks the cathedral. The scaffolding is on fire. Everyone is exiting in a mad dash. There is ash flying through the air.
I have lost sight of the convict! No!
The police arrive to chaos. No one can find the fugitive. He’s gotten away again. At least no one was hurt in the explosion.
Maybe it isn’t my destiny to catch my enemy and avenge my friend. Do I really want to chase him forever? When do I quit? When should I just let the professionals do their job?
I must keep searching.
I go back to my apartment and feed my parakeet. On the news, I see images of the cathedral explosion, and my nemesis walking in view of the camera, smiling slyly.
I will help catch him.
