Have you ever had one of those moments you just felt was going to change everything? A real butterfly effect situation? Let me tell you about mine:
My girlfriends and I had been planning a girls’ cruise to the Bahamas for months. Embarkation day was just about a week away. I was busy double checking my packing list when my phone rang.
“Hello, this is Sam from Ocean Glow Journeys. I am reaching out to let you know there has been a change in your cruise itinerary due to a severe weather warning in Nassau. Your ship will be rerouted to the Caribbean. This is standard industry practice. The new itinerary will be sent to your email.”
I held the phone in my hand, uncertainty clouding my thoughts. We had chosen the Bahamas specifically because we had already done a Caribbean cruise two years earlier.
Jess, Becky, Vicky, and I met for brunch the next day to discuss our options. Becky and Vicky opted to take the full refund, while Jess and I decided to continue with the trip, despite the itinerary change.
Once on board, Jess and I embraced the whole experience. On day three, we arrived in Aruba and disembarked for a snorkel and shopping excursion. Several attractive single guys we had befriended earlier on the trip were also joining this excursion.
While snorkeling, I ended up getting a terrible cramp in my leg. Ty, one of our new cruise friends, was able to help me back to shore and found someone from staff to assist me.
While the staff was providing first aid, Ty ran over to a nearby stand and bought some sandwiches for us. We sat on the beach eating and talking while waiting for the others to return.
I reached down to grab my sandwich only to discover it was gone! It had been snitched by an unscrupulous vulture!
Rather than making the group of vultures purge my stolen lunch, Ty offered to split the rest of his sandwich with me.
Soon, we were headed back to the ship with shopping bags and stories in tow. At dinner that night, Ty and his friend Dylan joined us. Unless I was mistaken, this was becoming a regular double date adventure.
By the end of the week, our group of four had become two couples and four very good friends. We learned that we only lived about an hour apart from each other, making things far easier than long-distance relationships.
When we arrived back at home, Jess and I told Becky, Vicky, and their husbands all about our adventures at sea. We were both incredibly thankful for the interrupted cruise plan.
Sometimes those butterfly effect moments turn out to be amazing.
